The machines: hand welder first

Settings that actually work
- Start-point temperatures: TPO typically welds hotter than PVC — but membrane brand, thickness, wind and deck temperature all shift the number. The only valid setting is the one your daily test weld proves.
- Speed and pressure: steady hand speed with the silicone roller tracking 2–3 cm behind the nozzle; a thin molten bleed-out at the seam edge signals a good weld.
- Peel test: a correct weld tears the membrane, not the seam. Anything that peels clean is a cold weld — adjust and re-test.
The failures inspectors find
- Cold welds from racing the gun or welding a dusty lap — the top cause of leak callbacks.
- Scorched TPO — overheated membrane loses its weldable surface; patching is the only fix.
- Unprobed seams — every seam edge should be probe-checked cold, the same discipline as air-testing a geomembrane wedge seam.
- Aged membrane welded unprepared — weathered TPO/PVC needs cleaning (and on old PVC, often a primer) before repair welds hold.
