7 Geomembrane Installation Mistakes That Cause Liner Failures
Almost every leaking pond we are asked to help repair traces back to the same short list of installation mistakes — none of them caused by the liner itself. Avoid these seven and your HDPE geomembrane will outlast the structure around it.
1. Welding on poor subgrade
Stones, debris and soft spots under the liner puncture it under load. The subgrade must be compacted, smooth and free of sharp objects before the first roll is deployed — with a protection geotextile where the specification demands it.
2. Skipping the trial seam
Temperature, speed and pressure that worked yesterday fail today when ambient conditions change — a daily reality in Gulf summers. Run a trial seam each shift on the actual material, peel test it, then start production welding.
3. Welding dirty or damp overlaps
Dust and morning condensation are invisible in the finished weld and fatal in the peel test. Wipe every overlap immediately before the wedge welding machine passes.
4. Wrong machine for the seam
Forcing a hot air gun to make structural seams, or dragging a wedge welder into corners it cannot navigate, both end badly. Split the work properly — our guide hot wedge vs extrusion welding shows how — and keep an extrusion welder on site for the details.
5. No air testing of dual-track seams
The test channel exists to be pressurised. Sealing it and watching the gauge takes minutes per seam and catches discontinuities before the pond is filled, not after.
6. Ignoring thermal movement
HDPE expands and contracts strongly with temperature. Deploy with appropriate slack ("wrinkle management"), avoid welding sheets stretched drum-tight at midday, and schedule critical seams for cooler hours.
7. Mismatched rod and resin
Extrusion repairs made with random rod fail peel tests even when they look perfect. Match rod grade to the liner — covered fully in our HDPE welding rod guide.
Getting the right sheet in the first place
Several of the failures above start before anyone switches a machine on — the wrong sheet grade, thickness or roll size for the job. If you are still specifying material, it is worth reviewing options with a dedicated Geomembrane Sheet Supplier in Dubai as well as our own HDPE liner supply, so the sheet and the welding equipment are matched from the start.
